Report

fishing has been a bit spotty... fri wind picked up some in the pm as the front passed through... not much of a front..by sat am the wind had layed and it looked like the weatherman was on our side.. when we left the dock it was still 48F, although the water temp was a balmy 69, we were fishing over shell.. days baits were to be live shrimp under a poppin' cork and various flavours of Gulp. first stop was a small reef that has been producing for us the last 10 days or so... not much luck except for a bunch of rat reds , one keeper red approx 25" and 2 keeper trout- 17-18". wind was almost nill and this reef seemed popular with the guides as 3 guide boats came and went while we were trying to coax the fish into biting.. went on to the next reef where we found tons of bait.. we anchored, put on our wading gear and went to see what we could find... Lots of Sheephead and some really large ones, but we were not keeping Sheephead.. lots of rat reds, plus a couple of keepers we could not keep on the hook and a double handful of trout (17-21")..and one keeper Flounder, best baits were Gulp for the trout and Flounder.Shrimp for the rest.. we picked up and went to find some Bull Reds or large black drum, cruisin' as they tend to do this time of year.. looked at a couple of small reefs, but nothing... then we saw a small pod of reds??, black drum??? ( 6-8) of them... we positioned the boat to intercept them and when they were close enough, we cast over them, one of took the bait(GULP)and IT WAS ON !!!!for the young lady that took the rod from me, what experience she lacked, she more than made up for with enthusiasm .. we fought the large black drum (we now could see it) for approx 15 minutes... 12# line you know... we had to chase it down a time or two , to keep it from spooling us... but it was not to be... when we got it close , it dove under the boat and cut the line on the prop.. oh well.. had a good time and had plenty of fish to take to Josies' for grilling. change of Plans...Josies was closed for whatever reason... we went to Carmines' which is right across the street.... It was FABULOUS.. had the fish grilled and Carmine and Larry did a fantastic job.. You'll try it, you will not be disappointed... 'till next time capt mac
